Il 31 dicembre 1936 è nato a Kolín, in Repubblica Cèca, il mezzosoprano Eva Randová. Nota come campionessa di nuoto in gioventù, ha studiato canto al Conservatorio di Praga e debuttato in teatro nel 1962. È stata presente più volte a Bayreuth, affermandosi come efficace interprete dei ruoli wagneriani di Waltraute, Gutrune, Kundry e Fricka. È stata frequentemente invitata a Stoccarda, Berlino, Parigi, Vienna e Londra. Specializzata nelle opere di Janáček e di Dvořák, ha ricevuto nel 1987 il Premio Lawrence Olivier per la sua interpretazione di Kostelnička Buryjovka nella Jenůfa alla Royal Opera House. È stata Direttrice dell’Opera di Stato a Praga.

In questo giorno del 1948 nasceva a Bromley, sobborgo di Londra, l’organista e direttore di coro Stephen Cleobury. Organista al St John’s College di Cambridge e all’abbazia di Westminster, fu anche presidente del Royal College of Organists dal 2008. Nel 1982 assunse la carica di direttore del Coro del King’s College di Cambridge, dove insegnò anche storia della musica. L’anno successivo divenne Direttore della Cambridge University Music Society. Dal 1995 al 2007 è stato direttore principale dei BBC Singers, venendo poi nominato direttore onorario per il biennio 2007-2008. È deceduto a York nel giorno di Santa Cecilia, il 22 novembre 2019.

Festeggiamo oggi il compleanno di Göran Söllscher, virtuoso svedese della chitarra classica, nato il 31 dicembre 1955 a Växyö. Formatosi al Conservatorio Reale di Copenhagen, ha vinto a ventitré anni il Concorso Internazionale di Chitarra di Parigi ed ha successivamente firmato un contratto di lunga durata con l’etichetta tedesca Deutsche Grammophon. È noto per il repertorio molto vasto che comprende i massimi autori barocchi, la grande tradizione chitarristica spagnola ed anche riuscite trascrizioni della musica moderna, compresa quella dei Beatles. Ha collaborato attivamente con il violinista Gil Shaham nella realizzazione di dischi in duo dedicati alle musiche di Schubert e Paganini.
