Nasceva a Londra in questo giorno del 1894 il compositore Ernest Moeran. Intorno ai 15 anni apprese la musica con Robert Sterndale Bennett, che incoraggiò il suo talento emergente. Studiò poi pianoforte e composizione con Stanford e, dopo la guerra, con Ireland. Iniziò a raccogliere e arrangiare musica del Norfolk e di altre regioni, collezionando oltre 150 canzoni popolari. Il suo stile, molto influenzato dalla musica popolare irlandese e dai paesaggi del Norfolk, può talora apparire come conservatore. I suoi esiti migliori sono la Prima Sinfonia, i Concerti per violino e violoncello, la Sinfonietta e la Serenade. Fu trovato morto in un fiume il 1° dicembre del 1950.

Cento anni fa esatti nasceva ad Amsterdam il violinista, direttore e musicologo Jaap Schroeder. Formatosi alla Sorbona con Jacques Thibaut, si specializzò nella musica barocca eseguita su strumenti originali. Negli anni Sessanta creò il Quadro Amsterdam e poi il Concerto Amsterdam e, nel 1973, il Quartetto Esterházy. Dal 1981 fu direttore musicale e primo violino dell’Academy of Ancient Music di Londra. Come didatta, ebbe incarichi da rinomate università e accademie musicali. Molto interessato alla lettura violinistica poco nota del XVII e XVIII secolo, registrò musica virtuosa di autori quali Uccellini, Lonati, Biber e Leclair. Si spense ad Amsterdam a Capodanno del 2020.
